VCCDC Education & Counseling understands the uncertainty that can come with attempting to buy a home. We highly recommend Coaching for Homeownership as a first step. One of our experienced counselors spends about one hour with the client to examine potential homebuyer circumstances and the financial situation, and works to build a plan for how to proceed in preparing for homeownership.
Working in this intimate, one-on-one environment allows us to work together to candidly answer such important questions as:
- Is this the right time for you to buy a house?
- How much home can you really afford?
- Do you qualify for any special loans or down-payment assistance programs?
- What are the next steps?
Those next steps vary for every client—some may need to resolve credit issues, or save money for a down payment or receive ongoing budget counseling. Another option many of our clients participate in is our Adult Financial Empowerment Program, a six-hour course that focuses on four key areas to financial success:
- Developing a budget
- Working with checking and savings accounts
- Understanding credit and a credit report
- Knowing your rights as a consumer
Each lesson plan includes self-assessment and worksheets to help our clients tailor the course to your particular needs. The end result is that you have the knowledge and confidence you need in order to make informed financial decisions for yourself, your family and your community.
These individual Coaching for Homeownership sessions help you put together your unique puzzle to successful homeownership.
If you’re not sure that you’re ready to meet with a Loan Officer or apply for a loan, you may want to make an appointment to meet with one of our HUD-certified Homeownership Counselors. The Homeownership Counselors will prepare a Homebuyer Assessment and help you determine your next steps. To meet with a counselor or to register for the Homebuyer Workshop, call our Home Ownership Center at (805) 273-7800.
