Home is not a place, it’s a feeling…

Shapiro Family (City of TO)For Aimee Shapiro her new home is more than just a place it’s the feeling of freedom, independence and peace. Homeownership wasn’t something that Aimee, a single mother of two boys, thought she would ever achieve. After her divorce she moved in with her parents to make ends meet and did not have homeownership on her mind. One day when walking around her neighborhood she noticed an open house sign and decided to check it out. There she met VCCDC Realtor, Tanya Reyes, who told her about VCCDC’s programs and services. After hearing about the opportunity to purchase this home, Aimee felt like it was worth a shot, “it seemed like the right time to do this for me and my sons. The pieces were falling into place and the time was right.”

After attending an orientation and going through the application process Aimee was selected to be a homebuyer for one of the 2 affordable properties up for sale by the City of Thousand Oaks. With the help of the VCCDC’s lending team Aimee was able to obtain VCCDC’s WISH and CalHome down payment assistance programs to help her with the purchase of her home. “The down payment assistance was critical in helping me buy my home. I wouldn’t have been able to buy without it. VCCDC made it work so that my payment could be affordable.”

Although VCCDC’s down payment assistance was an important piece of the puzzle the partnership between VCCDC and the City of Thousand Oaks wasShapiro Family (City of TO) with Tanya just as critical in making Aimee’s dream of homeownership a reality. “This was an opportunity of a lifetime for the homebuyers involved. It takes the willingness from partners like the City of Thousand Oaks to make homeownership possible for families like Ms. Shapiro’s. This project further reinforced the need for affordable housing and partnerships with municipalities like the City of Thousand Oaks“ says Alex Vega, Director of Lending Services for VCCDC.

Aimee loves having her own space for herself and her sons. Her favorite place is her office, which she calls her “calm zone”, where she can have time for herself and catch up on work when needed. And the icing on the cake? She gets to live right across from her parents making this new stage in her life even sweeter!  “Working with VCCDC was wonderful. Whenever there was a bump along the way Alex and Clara were so encouraging. Tanya was phenomenal. I felt like I had a lot of cheerleaders rooting me on to make this happen.”
